तमसो मा ज्योतिर्गमय
"Lead me from darkness to light."

Since time immemorial, light has been revered as a force that dispels fear, nurtures life, and connects the human spirit to the divine. In the Indian cultural imagination, the lamp (diya) holds a unique and sacred position—not only as a source of physical illumination but also as a symbol of wisdom, purity, and spiritual transcendence.

From birth to death, lamps accompany the important milestones of life. They light the way during rites of passage, rituals, and celebrations, becoming inseparable from the fabric of daily living and the sacred. In their silent glow, they embody a deeper philosophy—of bringing inner awakening and enlightenment to a world often shadowed by ignorance. As the Buddhist teaching proclaims, "Atta Deepa Bhava""Be a lamp unto yourself." This timeless message invites each individual to seek their own light, their own truth.

The exhibition Light of Life traces the fascinating journey of lamps through Indian civilization. Beginning with the flaming torches used by early cave-dwellers, the display showcases the transformation of lighting technology and design through the ages—culminating in the sophisticated innovations of the modern era, including LED lighting.

Our collection brings together an array of historical artifacts that reflect the creativity, devotion, and adaptability of Indian societies. From simple clay diyas to intricately crafted metal lamps, from oil lamps used in ancient temples to contemporary interpretations, each object on view narrates a story of human ingenuity and cultural evolution.

In presenting this journey from primal fire to electric glow, we invite visitors to reflect on the enduring significance of light—not just as a physical necessity but as a metaphor for knowledge, hope, and renewal.
